The Prestone DEX-COOL™ Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant was developed as a universal OAT coolant suitable for use in all makes and all models of cars and light trucks, including both modern vehicles factory filled with other OAT/HOAT formulations and older vehicles that came from the factory with conventional silicated (IAT) coolants. 

While Prestone is aware of the on-line forums and discussions on the compatibility issues between 2-EH (i.e., 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, 2-EHA, or its alkali metal salts) and certain gasket materials, these issues are not present in our extensive real world product testing nor have we received complaints or claims from the tens of millions of Prestone customers that have used this product in liquid cooled gasoline and diesel engines on the road today.  Prestone has marketed DEX-COOL antifreeze coolant and similarly formulated coolant products, containing 2-EH, for aftermarket use in North America and around the world since 2000.
 

It should be noted that Prestone DEX-COOL™ Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (AF888/AF850) has been approved by General Motors as world-wide factory fill and service fill coolant since 2001 (under GM6277M/GMW3420 for DEX-COOL™ Extended Life Coolant).  Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant technology with 2-EH has also been approved by Ford Motor Corporation as world-wide factory fill and service fill coolant (as Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze Coolant) since 2010 model year. In addition, Prestone DEX-COOL coolant has also been approved for use as factory fill and service fill coolant for use in vehicles produced by SAAB, Opel, Navistar international Corporation (Truck OEM), Vauxhall, Asian vehicle OEMs such as Daewoo (since 2006), Suzuki, JMC (Jiangling Motors Corporation) , and GAC Motor, etc..

 
It should also be noted that factory fill coolants containing 2-EH (i.e., 2-ethyl hexanoic acid or its alkali metal salts) have been widely used in the US since 1995 model years. The 2-EH containing coolants have been used in Europe and around the world since 1975. In fact, Opel approved the use of G-48 (a 2-EH containing coolant) in its vehicles from 1975 to 2000 and Mercedes approved the use of G-48 in its vehicles from 1976 to 2014. The overwhelming majority of the aftermarket coolants for sale in the US and around the world today contain 2-EH.  In addition to GM and Ford, many global vehicle OEMs including VW, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Opel, Volvo, Bentley, Land Rover, Mini, Mitsubishi Carisma/Colt, Skoda, Smart, Tesla, and Truck OEMs such as CATERPILLAR, Freightliner, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, MAN, and MACK currently use antifreeze/coolants containing 2EHA as factory and/or service fill coolants (e.g., coolants such as G-48, G-11, G-34, CAT EC-1, etc. marketed by BASF, Valvoline, Chevron/Texaco, Shell, Exxon, and other coolant vendors).  Since 2EHA containing coolants are in such wide-spread use, many vehicle OEMs have designed engine cooling systems so that they would be compatible with the use of engine coolants containing 2EHA even though their own approved coolants do not contain 2-EH (For example, Chrysler had design changes in their vehicle cooling systems to ensure their compatibility with 2-EH containing aftermarket coolants as reported by SAE in 2012).

 

In the U.S. and around the world today, OAT coolants account for the majority of the coolants in use in modern vehicles (Chrysler was the last NA OEM to switch its factory fill coolant from a low silicate HOAT coolant to an OAT coolant). Ford made the switch for the 2010 model year. GM changed to DEX-COOL™ for the 1995 model year). Many of the Japanese and Korean OEMs use OAT coolants containing a low level of phosphate for factory fill since around 2003 - 2005. European OEMs have specified Si-OAT (i.e., HOAT), or OAT coolants for use in their vehicles since the middle of 1970. In other areas of the world, automakers typically use coolant formulations selected by their US, European, Japanese or Korean joint-venture partners.


Given this significant world usage, industry certified testing, and history, it is a realistic conclusion that Prestone antifreeze/coolant is not only safe, but is also a preferable high quality choice for engine cooling.
